What is traditional copper plate photogravure?

From a photograph taken with my digital camera, converted to black and white, I make an overhead transparency on my inkjet printer.  Then a sheet of gelatin-coated paper is made light sensitive by soaking in potassium dichromate. The gelatin paper and the transparency, as well as a continuous tone screen are exposed together under UV light.  The exposed gelatin paper is then remoistened and adhered to a copper plate. The plate is placed in warm water. Gentle agitation of the water removes excess gelatin.  Where the UV light went through the light areas of the transparent image, the gelatin hardens; where the image was darker, the gelatin stays softer.  The plate is etched in different strength baths ferric chloride (a corrosive salt).  The light hardened gelatin areas resist the etch of the ferric; the soft areas allow the etch to make the tiny impressions which will hold the ink of the next step.  The copper plate is spread with a thick oil-based ink which stays in the impressions and is wiped off the smooth surface. The plate is then placed on the bed of a press with a piece of dampened paper over the top and rolled through. The paper picks up the image as a print. The plate is then re-inked and the process repeated.
